Root Canal Therapy or Tooth Extraction: Which is Right for You?
Do I Need A Root Canal?
Whenever the pulp of a tooth is compromised by infection, there are only two treatment options: root canal therapy or extraction. If you are ever faced with this difficult decision, it is important to familiarize yourself with each procedure. Next, evaluate the short- and long-term benefits of each option to make an informed decision. Our Bowmanville Dental team can talk with you about the details of both procedures so you can make a choice that is right for you.
What is Root Canal Therapy?
In simple terms, root canal therapy involves removing the pulp of a tooth and replacing it with a synthetic filling. During this procedure an access hole is created in the top of the tooth, and the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues are removed. Next, your dentist will thoroughly clean and disinfect the internal surfaces. The canals are then filled with a flexible dental filling material, and the tooth is sealed to reduce the risk of re-contamination. In many cases, a dental crown is recommended as well, to reinforce the affected tooth and restore your bite.
When is Root Canal Therapy Recommended?
Root canal therapy is indicated whenever the nerve inside the tooth is breached by bacteria. This can occur due to trauma or decay. For example, if you are stressed and tend to grind your teeth at night, a tooth could become cracked. Eventually, the fracture extends into the nerve and begins to cause problems. Or, perhaps you constantly trap food between two teeth. As a result, this hard-to-reach area develops a cavity. Over time, the decay worsens, eventually affecting the inner layers of the tooth. Root canal therapy may be a viable option if:
• The affected tooth is supported by healthy gum and bone tissue
• You are committed to maintaining good oral hygiene and attending routine dental visits
• You have a medical condition that makes tooth extraction a risk
About Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions have been performed for centuries. However, modern techniques allow your dentist to perform this procedure as comfortably and gently as possible. During this treatment, the affected tooth is freed from the surrounding tissues and carefully lifted from its socket. If necessary, dissolvable stitches may be placed over the surgical site to promote healing.
When is Tooth Removal Recommended?
In some instances, root canal therapy may not be predictable. If this is the case, your doctor may recommend an extraction. You may need to consider tooth removal if:
• The tooth is not salvageable, even with root canal therapy
• There is not enough healthy tooth structure remaining
• A large fracture has extended into the nerve of the tooth
• There is no tooth on the opposing arch, thereby making this tooth non-functional
Treatment Timelines
While a tooth extraction can be completed in one office visit, root canal therapy may take two to three appointments. While we never recommend choosing a procedure based on treatment time alone, we understand this may be a factor for some patients.
Risk vs Benefit
When it comes down to it, you will need to weigh risk vs benefit when choosing your treatment. This will be different for every individual. That is why we recommend coming in for a consultation. After a thorough assessment, your dentist can help you make an informed decision.
